About Granite
Granite is an igneous rock that is created from magma being cooled slowly under great pressure. It is one of the hardest stones, second only to diamonds. Granite can be found all over the world but varies greatly in veining and colour. It can be found in colours ranging from almost pure white to brightly exotic to almost solid black, depending on the country of origin. Although granite is densely grained, it may become infused with other minerals, producing a patterned movement along with its distinct colour. In this way, granite comes in an endless array of colours and patterns.
The availability of granite was once limited to its local origin. This scenario changed with the advent of technology. With the discovery of advanced mechanics and worldwide sources of supply, granite can be obtained more easily and economically. Quarries employ innovative techniques, such as diamond cable saws, to cut blocks from the stone mass in hours instead of days. Occasionally assisted by natural separations, the quarry trims the blocks to be transported by truck to a processing plant. High-speed gang saws and computerized cutting machines cut the block into slabs in a fraction of the time previously required.
When the slabs reach the fabricators, veteran craftsmen take advantage of new tools and techniques to maximize the natural beauty and produce in swift time, a finely polished finished product.
Why Choose Granite?
Apart from being tougher than most naturally occurring stones, granite imparts an air of luxury. Take a look at the reasons why granite is considered a good investment:
Unique - Granite is naturally beautiful, and its unique beauty cannot be duplicated
Durable - Being virtually indestructible, the stone will not fade or deteriorate over time
Environmentally kind- Being a natural stone, it contains no pollutants and is produced with little energy output

Low maintenance - Granite keeps looking beautiful and natural with negligible maintenance
Wise Investment - Granite products increases the resale value of a property
Affordable - Technology has reduced production costs, rendering granite competitive with many other manufactured products
Learn More about Granite FAQ
It is natural to be concerned and have questions before you invest in granite products. Read the FAQs below to gain more insight.
Question: Is granite expensive?
Answer: Granite is surprisingly affordable. Compared to other hard surface materials, granite is not expensive. The beauty and durability of granite may increase resale value.
Question: Are there different qualities of granite?
Answer: The quality of granite is subjective and depends on the features that best suit the needs of the buyer. However, granite is often rated on the combination of colours, surface porosity and the lusture when polished. The quality of the finished product has more to do with the workmanship than the product.
Question: How do less expensive synthetic countertops compare to granite?
Answer: Though they may look similar, granite countertops are unsurpassed in their resistance to heat, scratches, stains, bacteria and overall performance and longevity. Acrylic and other manufactured materials can’t equal the durability of granite.
Question: Do I have to reseal the granite?
Answer: With today’s advanced technology, the granite is sealed before it even reaches the manufacturing yard. MTM Designs applies the final, complete seal in their shop, so you should not have to worry about resealing most varieties.
Question: How do I clean the granite?
Answer: Simply wipe the surface with a wet cloth. You can add a few drops of a mild cleaner or soap, then rinse well and dry with a soft cloth. Add a little vinegar to the water if you like. For marble, DO NOT add vinegar.
Question: Will granite burn or stain?
Answer: No. Granite is practically indestructible. It won’t burn and rarely stains. If it does stain, in almost all cases, it may be removed with an appropriate cleaning product. Your stone professional can advise you on the best solution.
Question: How does granite or marble stand up to heavy foot traffic in a foyer or entranceway?
Answer: A few simple precautions will protect your granite or marble floor and keep it looking beautiful for years to come. A non-slip mat outside and a carpet or an area rug inside the door will capture most of the dirt and abrasive grit. Use a dust mop frequently to remove dirt and dust particles, and wash with warm water and with a small amount of mild detergent, rinse and dry.
